The PhotogenX Discipleship Training School (DTS) is designed to help you grow in understanding of God’s character, learn how to live more like Jesus and identify your unique gifts and purpose that can help impact the world around you.
It is an intense residential training course that begins with a 12-week lecture phase, followed by an 8-12 week outreach phase. The DTS emphasizes cross-cultural exposure and global awareness preparing students to answer the call to “Go into all the world and make disciples of all nations” – Matthew 28:19.
If you desire to know God, are passionate about seeing justice walked out in this world and are willing to engage in photography, media and other forms of creativity in order to be a voice for the voiceless, then the photogenX DTS is for you!
Core Content of the DTS
In the first 12 weeks of the school, outstanding speakers, teachers, authors and activists will talk about knowing God, making Him known and taking action in our world. Here are just a few of the possible topics:
- The Character & Nature of God.
- Hearing God’s Voice.
- Biblical World View.
- World Missions.
So what makes the photogenX DTS different?
Here is what one past DTS Student/Staff said… “…It’s about setting aside time and being willing to listen to the cries of the oppressed by opening ones heart to the realities of the world, the purpose God has for the world, and finding out what part you have to play in the world. To me the big difference is that we aren’t just training people to use photography or even just having a discipleship school. We are recognizing a widening conversation within the world about injustice and wanting to participate in the conversation. This is a starting point to enter into that ongoing conversation and begin to realize how God can actually use our lives to make a difference…” – Steve Schallert
The photogenX DTS is designed for those who care about the injustice of our world, want to know God more and are eager to use their gifts and talents to make a difference.
We will have a basic weekly photo class taught by Susi Childers (photogenX co-founder) and other photographers and a basic weekly photo assignment. We accept photographers on all levels (beginners to advanced). Much of our conversation and prayer will be focused on justice and we gain various tools to equip us to better engage with what is happening in our world. The photogenX.
DTS is geared towards 18-30 year olds.
The 8-12 Week Field Assignment
Before you arrive, your staff will have researched locations, prayed & have a plan to present to you by the third week of lectures. They will give you time to pray about your options & you will then tell them where you feel the Lord is leading you for outreach. You will have time with your team to get prepared for outreach. During the field assignment you may find yourself working in a Cambodian orphanage, serving & praying for the poor in India, ministering to prostitutes in Thailand, or caring for street children in the Philippines.
The possibilities are endless. As your team begins to live out love practically in the margins of society, you may also have the opportunity to put into practice what you’ve learned during lectures about photography & creative media’s ability to empower the disenfranchised & give them a voice!
Seeing as the nature of a DTS outreach is short-term in nature, these outreaches could be used as possible springboards for long-term photogenX initiatives.
